An official team led by the Pondicherry Local Administration minister NG Panneerselvam visited here on Friday to learn about the Solid Waste Management (SWM) scheme implemented here sucessfully.
The team had visited the Solid Waste Processing Unit at Gandhi Nagar in Katpadi and learnt about the process of segregating and recycling the wastes. They had also visited similar units at the Christian Medical College and Hospital and Ariyur Sri Malaikodi temple to see the bio gas plant at Kaniyambadi.
MLAs Ashok Anandh, Kalyanasundaram, Karthikeyan, Kuppusamy, director for the Local Administration department, Sundaravadivelu, Pondicherry Municipality executive engineer Sivabalan and engineer for the SWM scheme Mohandoss accompanied the mininster.
Panneerselvam after visiting the Katpadi unit said that Pondy has been involving private operators in collection and disposal of garbage. But now, the government itself was collecting wastes and disposing it off in the outer areas.
Pointing out that the piling of garbage in the outer area was not safe, the government has formed a team, led by him to visit several places where solid waste management schemes were implemented sucessfully so that it could be emulated in the state.
He said that the scheme was well implemented in the fort city. The team would also pay a visit to Delhi, Kanpur, Surat and other cities to study the scheme and to submit a report to the Pondicherry government.
Vellore Corporation Commissioner P Janaki, engineer Devakumar, health officer Priyamvatha, Tharapadavedu zonal officer Venkatesan and president Sunil Kumar accompanied the visting team.
