THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The water supply project that was meant to delete the woes of a land where the water resources have been contaminated by garbage has been caught in technical snags. Even after the City Corporation transferring the fund of Rs 2 crore for a comprehensive water supply scheme to be implemented in Vilappil panchayat, it has not moved an inch even after months. While the Corporation puts the blame on the KWA, the latter refuses to carry the burden, negating delay of any kind. The water supply scheme envisages availability of fresh drinking water connection in every home in the panchayat and has been conceived under the JNNURM Centre-sponsored scheme. The fund of Rs 2 crore for the scheme was transferred to KWA by the previous Council towards the end of its term. As soon as the new Council came to power and the local people began taking to protests in Vilappilsala against the waste treatment plant there, the Mayor and her team had promised to speed up all projects in Vilappil. Not just the water supply scheme, but street lighting and road development works were promised. When contacted, Deputy Mayor G Happykumar said that the Corporation would soon take up the issue with KWA. The last Council had handed over the funds, the delay by KWA officials has proved to be the hurdle. A meeting has been called for June 7, when the issue would be discussed with KWA,’’ he said.To our query, the KWA officials said that the project was being tendered and would take off soon. "The tender would be awarded soon. There is no delay in the scheme, ‘’ said KWA Superintendent Engineer K P Krishnakumar. The meeting on June 7 is a review of all deposit projects of the Corporation and not just this one, officials said. Earlier, the street lighting project of the Corporation was disrupted by the local people in Vilappilsala, following which the UDF panchayat there had called for the help of the police. The construction works inside the plant are moving ahead in a fast pace and would be completed soon, the Deputy Mayor said.
