Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on Friday said his government will soon start the gradual process of scrapping of the contentious Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) even as the state witnessed another terror strike by Pakistan backed terrorists on Friday.
"We'll start gradual process of scrapping of AFSPA. We'll make it a point that ppl who've come from Pakistan administered Kashmir must get one time settlement, a committee will be set up," he said.
Mufti's statement came even as at least six people including two security personnel and two terrorists were killed in an encounter at the Rajbagh police station in Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.
The terror attack is the first after Mufti took over as the Chief Minister and started at around 6 AM on Friday. His Peoples Democratic Party is in power along with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Sayeed also said the state government will press for one time settlement for those migrants who have come from Pakistan administered Kashmir and a committee will also be set up under Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh to look after this.
The Chief Minister said the government's focus will be to rehabilitate refugees economically. "I assure you that we will get them priority in private jobs," Sayeed said.
Various organisations in Jammu and Kashmir Northeast have termed AFSPA as "draconian". Ever since the killing of Thangjam Manorama in Manipur, activist Irom Sharmila has been on an indefinite fast and had declared that she would continue her fast till the Act is repealed.
