Work on Maruthamkuzhi bridge getting delayed
Work on Maruthamkuzhi bridge getting delayed

You may have to wait some more to zip through the new bridge coming up at Maruthamkuzhi near Sasthamangalam over the Killiyar.

In April, PWD officials had hoped to complete the work in two months’ time, but it’s August now and they say it is bound to take another three months at least. All this, because of a delay in shifting a water supply pipeline of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA).

The KWA, on its part, is taking steps to complete the pipeline work as quickly as possible. The pipeline has to be shifted to one side so that work related to the bridge can be completed. On Monday, the KWA had announced a major water supply disruption in parts of the city this week to complete its work.

‘’It will take us another three months to complete the remaining work on the bridge after the KWA work is completed. Only then can we construct the retaining wall and approach road on the Maruthamkuzhi side,’’ a PWD executive engineer said.

According to the PWD, the KWA work should have been completed by June 22, and the area handed over to them to complete their work. But this got delayed by two months, botching up the entire schedule.

The new bridge is expected to provide a solution to the knotty traffic problem at Maruthamkuzhi during peak hours. It will also save nearly one kilometre for motorists on the Maruthamkuzhi-Sasthamangalam stretch. The main structure of the bridge was completed months ago and the small vehicles had begun using it even though the road is yet to be tarred.

The new Maruthamkuzhi bridge is a four-span structure 26.58 metres long. On the Sasthamangalam side, the proposed approach road will be 65 metres long and on the Maruthamkuzhi side, 325 metres long, PWD officials said.
