Nose picking is a common but unhygienic habit that is developed by many. Some people dig their noses in public, while others do it alone in private. Some people develop a habit of doing it, and sometimes it happens unconsciously. At times, it can even lead to embarrassment in front of other people, as it can disgust them. Even though many people think that digging noses has no harmful effects, a study has found that it can even lead to a lot of psychological illnesses. According to another study, it has been found that people who have a habit of digging their noses can develop psychological illnesses like Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
According to a report published by a team of researchers at Griffith University, Australia, it was found that a bacteria has the ability to travel through the olfactory nerve in the nose and into the brain, where it can create markers that become the initial stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
A similar study was published in the journal Scientific Reports, which observed that a bacteria called Chlamydia pneumoniae, which can infect humans and cause pneumonia, has also been discovered in the majority of human brains affected by late-onset Dementia. It has also been found that these bacteria travel to the brain and cause the formation of amyloid beta protein, which is responsible for the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Some of the common symptoms include Amnesia, language problems, comprehension problems, and unpredictable behaviour changes.
Ways to keep the nose clean:
Sometimes the nose feels stuffy, especially during the winter season. This is mainly because of the mucus that gets filled inside the nose. Many people try to remove it by digging the nose. Let’s look at some easy ways to get rid of it:
Using a clean cloth: People should always keep a clean cloth with themselves when they have a running nose. It helps to clean the dirt, dust, and mucus in the nose. One can also wash their nose at any time during the day. Doing this will protect it from germs and allergies.
Sniffing onions: If someone has a stuffy nose, they can even sniff onions as the smell of the vegetable works as a natural nasal cleanser.
Consuming ginger: Consuming ginger is another way to remove mucus from the nose. It has been found that ginger has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which help in getting rid of nasal congestion.
