The significance of the river Ganga has been mentioned most often in the Vedas, Puranas, Upanishads and scriptures. Scholars too think that Maa Ganga brings salvation in Kaliyug. Similarly, the Hindu pilgrimage town of Haridwar is world-famous for attaining salvation. Millions and millions of devotees come to Haridwar to take a dip in the river Ganga during religious rituals and festivals. From a religious point of view, bathing in Maa Ganga on Hindu festivals leads to attaining salvation. In ancient times, drops of nectar emanated from the Amrit Kalash in Haridwar, which adds to the importance of Maa Ganga in Haridwar.
According to the scriptures, Vedas, Puranas and Upanishads, the river Ganga descended to earth to bestow salvation on the 60 thousand sons of Sagar. Therefore, even today people bathe in the Ganga at Haridwar Har Ki Pauri to attain salvation. In Haridwar, where Lord Brahma did penance for thousands of millions of years, Lord Shiva’s in-laws are in Haridwar. The ancient name of Haridwar is Ganga Dwara. Hence, bathing in the river Ganga is said to be of utmost importance here.
In 2024, on the day of Pitru Visarjan Amavasya, if any work is done for the ancestors like Shraddha Karma, Tarpan, Pinddaan, rituals etc. after bathing in the Ganga, then full fruit will be obtained in many ways. According to the religious scriptures, the ancestors return to their world after being satisfied and blessing their descendants by taking a bath in Mother Ganga and doing their work to bestow salvation on the ancestors.
Haridwar’s learned astrologer Jyotishcharya Pandit Shridhar Shastri told Local 18 that in 2024, Pitru Visarjan Amavasya will be on October 2. On this day, the ancestors bid farewell from the earth by performing Shraddha Karma. If the devotees do any work for the ancestors after taking a bath in Mother Ganga, the person gets special benefits.
Astrologer Pandit Shridhar Shastri further explained that just as Maa Ganga gave salvation to the 60 thousand sons of Sagar, similarly she will give salvation to your ancestors on Pitru Visarjan Amavasya, for which your ancestors will be pleased and will give you auspicious results. If a person is suffering from Pitru Dosh or someone’s ancestors were unable to attain salvation or someone’s ancestors are wandering in the spirit world, then if they take a bath in the river Ganga and perform the Shraddha Karma of their ancestors as per the rituals, then the ancestors get peace and Maa Ganga gives them salvation.
Astrologer Pandit Shridhar Shastri added that Maa Ganga has the highest importance in the pilgrim city of Haridwar. Therefore, it is very important to offer Jalanjali to the ancestors by taking a bath in the Ganga in Haridwar on the day of Pitru Visarjan Amavasya.
