World Mental Health Day 2024: Supporting Mental Health Across Industries
On this World Mental Health Day, let’s remember that small actions, like savoring a piece of chocolate, booking a wellness getaway, or creating a supportive work environment, can have a profound impact on our mental well-being

World Mental Health Day, celebrated annually on October 10th, provides an opportunity to spotlight the importance of mental well-being across various industries. As conversations around mental health become more open, many sectors, including travel, corporate environments, and even indulgent foods like chocolates, are increasingly recognizing their role in promoting mental wellness. Today, we explore insights from industry leaders on how simple pleasures, such as chocolates, travel, and supportive workplaces, can positively impact mental health.

The Sweet Connection Between Chocolate and Wellness

Chocolate has long been associated with feelings of comfort and indulgence. Kanchan Achpal, CMO, SMOOR Chocolates, believes chocolate offers more than just a delightful taste—it also has tangible effects on our mood and overall well-being.

“Indulging in chocolate can enhance your overall mood,” says Achpal. “The rich flavors and luxurious textures create a comforting experience, making chocolate a perfect choice for those looking to lift their spirits and feel happier. Taking a moment to savor chocolate can be an effective way to unwind after a long day. Whether you prefer dark, milk, or white chocolate, each bite can provide a sense of relaxation and relief from daily stress.”

Chocolate contains compounds like flavonoids and serotonin-boosting ingredients, which can reduce stress and elevate mood, making it a small but impactful addition to your mental wellness routine. On World Mental Health Day, indulging in this sweet treat can serve as a gentle reminder to pause and enjoy life’s little pleasures.

Travel as Therapy for Mental Wellness

Travel has always been a source of joy, exploration, and discovery, but its therapeutic benefits have come to the forefront as more people seek relaxation, mental clarity, and rejuvenation. Rikant Pittie, Co-founder, EaseMyTrip, highlights how travel can act as a powerful tool for enhancing mental health.

“Travel offers significant therapeutic benefits that contribute positively to mental health. As more people recognize the importance of wellness-centric trips, there’s a growing preference for experiences that promote relaxation and rejuvenation,” Pittie explains. “Experiences such as leisure travel, wellness retreats, ‘sleep tourism,’ and spiritual tourism are specifically designed to foster well-being.”

Today’s travelers are increasingly prioritizing trips that promote self-care and mental wellness. Leading online travel agencies (OTAs), now curate customizable packages that include wellness accommodations, spa treatments, and even mindfulness programs. These tailored experiences offer an opportunity for travelers to disconnect from daily stressors and reconnect with themselves, making travel an ideal remedy for mental well-being.

The Importance of Mental Wellness in the Workplace

The role of the workplace in shaping mental well-being cannot be overstated. Many employees experience stress, anxiety, and burnout due to toxic work cultures, lack of leadership, and overwhelming workloads. As Amit Jain, CEO,  TeamLease HCM, points out, creating a supportive and healthy work environment is key to promoting mental wellness.

“The workplace is one of the primary sources that directly impacts the mental well-being of an individual,” says Jain. “Toxic work culture, lack of leadership involvement, poor accountability for work, and limited resources lead to stress, depression, and anxiety for the employees.”

To combat these issues, employers must cultivate a work environment where employees feel secure, valued, and respected. Technology provides several tools to assist with this, from employee engagement platforms that foster connectivity to survey tools that assess workforce mental health. Jain believes employers should take action by creating a comprehensive mental health plan and leveraging these technological solutions to support it.

Darshil Shah, Founder and Director, TreadBinary, expands on the importance of mental wellness resilience in the workplace. “Encouraging mental wellness resilience in the workplace goes beyond managing the stress of work—it’s about cultivating a culture where employees feel supported, empowered, and valued,” Shah explains.

He stresses the importance of open communication, empathy, and recognizing achievements, which can significantly impact an employee’s ability to manage challenges and thrive. “Promoting work-life balance, mental wellness initiatives, and recognizing achievements leads to a healthier and more productive workplace.”

Embracing Wellness Holistically

As we reflect on the significance of World Mental Health Day, it’s clear that mental well-being is not confined to one sector. From savoring chocolate to planning a rejuvenating trip or improving workplace culture, mental health is a priority that transcends industries. By embracing wellness holistically—whether through indulgence, exploration, or support—individuals and organizations alike can contribute to a world where mental health is celebrated and protected year-round.

On this World Mental Health Day, let’s remember that small actions, like savoring a piece of chocolate, booking a wellness getaway, or creating a supportive work environment, can have a profound impact on our mental well-being.
