UP: 1 Dead as 4-Storey Building Collapses in Lucknow Hours After Earthquake
DGP DS Chauhan said it's too early to say if the earthquake, which hit Nepal and impacted UP and Delhi-NCR earlier in the day, was the cause behind the collapse

One person died after a four-storey building collapsed on Tuesday evening in Lucknow’s Wazir Hasan Road area hours after an earthquake hit Nepal and impacted parts of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-NCR. As on Wednesday morning, five people were trapped under the debris.

DGP DS Chauhan had said that five people were still stuck under the debris and that proper oxygen is being supplied to them. They are in the same room, he had said, adding that they are in contact with two people.

Nobody has been arrested yet, a proper investigation will be done, DGP Chauhan added.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to ensure that adequate treatment is provided to the injured and directions were issued to hospitals to stay alert.

DGP DS Chauhan said eight families were present in the building, named Alaya Apartment, at the time of the incident. He said around 30-35 people were feared trapped in the debris. “Rescue operations are going on a war footing. CM Yogi Adityanath is taking updates from time to time,” the DGP added.

Earlier in the day, a 5-8-magnitude earthquake rocked Nepal and tremors were felt in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi and other places in India. China, too, felt the impact of the earthquake.

DGP Chauhan said it’s too early to say if the earthquake was the cause behind the collapse.

Lucknow District Magistrate Suryapal Gangwar echoed similar sentiments. “It is too early to comment as our efforts currently are directed to save the lives of the people trapped inside.” He, however, said locals informed the authorities that some work was going on in the basement of the building.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, who earlier said that three people died in the collapse, retracted his comments. Talking to PTI, he said there were initial reports of three people feared dead. “But now information is coming that nobody is dead. Those rescued from the building have been moved to hospitals,” Pathak said.

He also said that the building had around 12 flats, out of which nine flats had occupants.

SP Spokesperson Haider Abbas and his family, and Congress leader Amir Haider were trapped under the debris. Later, Amir Haider was rescued safely.
