While fans are eager to watch the next part of this popular franchise, let’s take a quick look at what has happened in the story so far.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
The story follows a scientist named Will Rodman, played by James Franco, who is working on a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. His experimental drug, ALZ-112, is tested on chimpanzees, one of which, named Caesar, exhibits remarkable intelligence as a result. As Caesar grows older, he becomes increasingly aware of his own intelligence and the mistreatment of apes in captivity. The film received critical acclaim for its groundbreaking visual effects, particularly in its portrayal of the intelligent ape characters, led by Andy Serkis’ motion-capture performance as Caesar.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
The story of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set a decade after the events of the first film, where a deadly virus has wiped out much of humanity, and Caesar, the leader of the genetically enhanced apes, has established a thriving community in the forests outside San Francisco. The film was praised for its compelling storytelling, stunning visual effects, and nuanced portrayal of the moral complexities inherent in the conflict between humans and apes.
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
The film picks up where the previous installment left off, with Caesar and his fellow apes facing off against a human military faction known as Alpha-Omega, led by the ruthless Colonel (played by Woody Harrelson). After suffering devastating losses, Caesar embarks on a quest for revenge, seeking to confront the Colonel and secure the future of his ape community. The film was praised for its powerful performances, breathtaking visual effects, and thought-provoking themes of survival, vengeance, and the nature of conflict.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
Director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.
Actor Kevin Durand plays the lead role of the mysterious antagonist i.e., Proximus Caesar. However, it is yet to be known whether he is a descendant of the original Caesar. Speaking to Total Film, the actor particularly described him as a “baddie and a narcissist.”
“But it’s coming down to, you know, homosapiens or apes and obviously he’s on the side of the apes, so he’s willing to do whatever needs to happen, by any means necessary, to ensure a future for apekind,” he further explained.
The first trailer of the film was released in November last year followed by the second one during the Super Bowl, hinting at a fresh take on the franchise with a new lead ape and an evolving storyline.
