Chowringhee Actress Anjana Bhowmick Passes Away, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Rituparna Sengupta React

Veteran Bengali actress Anjana Bhowmick has passed away. The seasoned actress was hospitalized in south Kolkata on Friday night for respiratory issues and succumbed on Saturday morning. Anjana, who was 79 years old, was the mother-in-law of actor Jisshu Sengupta. According to reports, her daughter Nilanjana and son-in-law Jisshu were by her side in the hospital on Saturday.

Anjana Bhowmik had been unwell for a while due to age-related health problems. She had reportedly been bedridden for the past five to six months and was being cared for by her daughters Nilanjana and Chandana. Directors Srijit Mukerji, Arindam Sil and other Bengali cinema celebrities joined Jishu and Nilanjana at the hospital after the news broke.

Anjana Bhowmik started her acting career at 20 with the 1964 Bengali film Anustup Chanda. She changed her name to Anjana before her debut. She became known for her on-screen chemistry with Uttam Kumar, starring together in films like Thana Theke Aschi, Chowringhee, Nayika Sambad, and Kabhi Megh. Her performance with Soumitra Chatterjee in Maheshweta (1967) was also praised. Anjana retired from acting many years ago.

Bengal’s superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee took to X to convey his condolences. “Deeply saddened by the news… You will always be in our hearts, Anjana Aunty. Sincere condolences to @Ninichinismamma, @Jisshusengupta and the entire family.”

Rituparna Sengupta paid tribute to the late actress and wrote on X, “Remembering the unforgettable legacy of Anjana Bhowmick. Her grace, talent, and unforgettable performances will forever b remembered in our hearts. Rest peacefully. My sincere condolences to Nilanjana, Jisshu & other family members.”
