We all know that members of the Kapoor khandaan have quirky nicknames. While Randhir Kapoor was called Daboo, brothers Rishi Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor were known as Chintoo and Chimpu, respectively. The trend of unusual funny nicknames continued in the new generation. Actor Karisma Kapoor’s nickname is Lolo and her younger sister, Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor Khan is called Bebo. While there may be interesting stories why these stars were given these funny nicknames, let us tell you how Kareena became Bebo.
In the month of September 1980, Kapoor family was blessed with the birth of two baby girls, Kareena and her cousin Riddhima Kapoor Sahni. Grandfather Raj Kapoor named Rishi’s daughter Riddhima and wanted to name Randhir’s daughter, who was born barely a week after Riddhima, as Siddhima.
The names of two new born girls were inspired from the names of wives of Lord Ganpati, Riddhi and Siddhi as they were born during the period of a festival whenLord Ganesh was worshipped. However, reportedly, Bebo’s mother Babita decided to name the newborn girl Kareena because she was reading Anna Karenina, a novel by Russian writer Leo Tolstoy during the time she was pregnant with Bebo.
While Kareena’s mother named her, it was her father who gave her a unique nickname. In a chat show, Kareena once said that she was named Bebo because her parents were looking for a name that could rhyme with Karisma’s nickname Lolo. She had also revealed that Karisma’s nickname was an innovation of the name of sweet roti called loli in Sindhi.
Kareena and husband Saif Ali Khan recently welcomed their second baby boy on February 21, 2021. The name of the newborn has not yet been decided, said Randhir, the grandfather of the child. When the couple had named their first child as Taimur Ali Khan, there was controversy as the name Timur was of a Turco-Mongol conqueror who invaded India in 1398.
