Amazon Prime Video is bringing a fresh take on the popular fictional detective Sherlock Holmes with a new series based on British author and journalist Andy Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes novels. In this series, actor Hero Fiennes Tiffin will reportedly play the lead role. The series will deal with the early life of Sherlock Holmes, his childhood, upbringing and elements that turned him into the genius we marvel at. According to Variety, Guy Ritchie is in the director’s chair and will also executive produce this eight-episode-long series. This special project will also reunite Ritchie and Tiffin, who have previously collaborated on the film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.

For director Ritchie, it is not the first time he has entered the world of Sherlock Holmes. He has also directed two films on the popular detective, with Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. Watson.

Talking about his upcoming project, Ritchie said, “In Young Sherlock we are going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before. We are going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love,” reports Variety.

Known for his work on Deep State and Rogue, Matthew Parkhill reportedly serves as the writer, showrunner and executive producer of the series, along with Ritchie and Andy Lane.

As far as the original novels are concerned, Andy Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes series is divided into eight books. The latest one was released in 2015.

According to its official synopsis, the upcoming series is an “action-packed origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective in an explosive re-imagining of this iconic character. At age 19, Sherlock Holmes is disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom. Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever.”
