Set in the background of the 19th century during the British Raj, the film follows the story of Guru Dutt who meets Meena Kumari, a lonely wife of rich landlord Rehman. The movie was commercially unsuccessful at the box office before garnering praise from the critics for the performance of the actors in the film. Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam became a milestone of Bollywood and is considered among the most important films in Dutts’ career. Viewers have given this film a rating of 8.1 out of 10 on IMDb.
Kaagaz Ke Phool
If we talk about the 10 best films of Bollywood, this film will also be counted at the top along with others. Kaagaz Ke Phool was released in 1959. It is counted among the cult classics of Bollywood. It was directed by Guru Dutt and starred Waheeda Rehman, Kumari Naaz, and Mehmood along with himself in the lead roles. The film was a box office bomb and pushed actor-director Guru Dutt to the brink of bankruptcy. It was later resurrected as a cult classic in the 1980s. The music was given by SD Burman. People have given this film a rating of 7.8 out of 10 on IMDb, which is higher than many of the best Bollywood films.
Aligarh
The movie came when the portrayal of homosexuals on screen was not so evident in Bollywood. It was directed by Hansal Mehta and starred Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkumar Rao in the lead roles. The film was released worldwide in 2016. It is counted as a flop upon release. Aligarh is considered one of the best films of Manoj Bajpayee’s career. The film is based on the true story of Ramchandra Siras, a professor and the head of the Classical Modern Indian Languages Faculty at Aligarh University.
