The film stars Josh Hartnett as a serial killer known as The Butcher and features Shyamalan’s daughter, Saleka, who wrote, produced and performed all the songs in the film as pop star Lady Raven. Hartnett’s character, Cooper, takes his daughter to a pop concert in an attempt to bond with her, only to discover that not everything is as it appears to be and it is all a trap. In an interview with Empire, Shyamalan explained his concept for the film as, “What if The Silence Of The Lambs happened at a Taylor Swift concert?"

While the film, as expected from The Sixth Sense director, is filled with twists, it has received a range of reviews from critics. Despite this, actor Josh Hartnett’s performance is highlighted as one of the best of his career.

Trap has received a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A review from on Rotten Tomatoes from critic William Bibbiani of TheWrap reads, “Doesn’t have the depth of Shyamalan’s most important films or the theatricality of his most memorably weird experiments. But it’s one of his best thrillers."

Matt Singer from ScreenCrush has called Trap, “The most overtly Hitchcockian thing Shyamalan’s ever made."

Meanwhile, Brian Orndorf of Blu-ray.com commented, “Trap isn’t all that forcefully constructed to begin with, but it falls apart long before it crawls to a limp conclusion, finding Shyamalan defiantly biting off more than he can chew when it comes to ludicrousness."

Before you watch the film that released on August 2, here’s the official trailer to get a glimpse of what the film has to offer:

Despite some underwhelming aspects of the film, Hartnett’s portrayal of the bumbling father who also has a hidden identity has been received very well. Dread Central praises Hartnett’s work saying, “Hartnett is in almost every frame of Trap and he devours the scenery. Since the audience is in on his little secret, his subtle facial expressions are rendered all the more devilish and almost charming. Shyamalan and Hartnett make it obvious why someone like him can get away with violence like he does."
