Marvel To Release Only Three Movies And Two Shows Each Year, But Why?
Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that they would downsize the MCU with a new objective to reduce the number of Marvel TV shows to two per year and the film output to no more than three per year.

Various productions over the years from the renowned Marvel Studios have created a lot of hype among fans. Every year, viewers are eagerly anticipating the upcoming films and series from the MCU. But now officials have decided to limit the content produced under the banner of the popular studio. In the latest, Disney is reassessing the number of films and television shows by Marvel Studios with plans to curtail output from the brand.

On Disney’s second quarter earnings call, CEO Bob Iger stated that they would downsize the MCU with a new objective to reduce the number of Marvel TV shows to two per year and the film output to no more than three per year. The CEO added that this is part of Disney’s overarching plan to minimise output and focus on quality, a philosophy that even Marvel Studios abides by. He added that the team is working on this new strategy, and they have a couple of films lined up in 2025. He also hinted about Avengers: The Kang Dynasty which is slated for a 2026 release.

Bob Iger shared, “Overall I feel great about the slate. It’s something that I’ve committed to spending more and more time on, the team is one that I have tremendous confidence in and the IP that we’re mining, including all the sequels that we’re doing, is second to none,” as quoted by the Hollywood Reporter. Moreover, the CEO responded to a question on Disney’s emphasis on sequels and originals, adding that the company is now focusing more on franchise films. He shared that now they are going to balance sequels with originals.

Meanwhile, this decision comes against the backdrop of the MCU, which has seen very few hits recently. The Russo Brothers, Anthony and Joseph Russo who are well-known for their Marvel movies such as Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame shared with GamesRadar+, “I think we’re in a transitional period and people don’t know quite yet how they’re going to receive stories moving forward, or what kinds of stories they’re going to want.” They also addressed the generational divide in how people consume media these days stating that younger viewers prefer instant gratification and consumption, whereas elderly audiences are accustomed to organised viewing experiences in theatre.
