Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in the upcoming Madame Web and Euphoria, joins forces once again with director Michael Mohan, the creative mind behind The Voyeurs, for their upcoming horror flick, Immaculate. The Motion Picture Association (MPA) recently stamped the film with an R-rating due to its depiction of strong and bloody violent content, grisly images, nudity, and some language. Despite its serene convent backdrop, audiences can anticipate a chilling experience akin to Mohan’s previous work, which didn’t shy away from controversial themes. Immaculate is set for a theatrical release on March 22 this year.
The plot revolves around Cecilia, portrayed by Sydney Sweeney, an American nun who finds herself trapped in a nightmarish ordeal upon entering a remote convent located in the Italian countryside. Alongside Sweeney, the film also features Simona Tabasco, Alvaro Morte, and Bendetta Porcaroli in key roles.
The collaboration between Sweeney and Mohan appears to be a fruitful one, despite the nature of their content. Reflecting on the genre’s evolution, Mohan talks about the disappearance of erotic thrillers, citing a lack of fearlessness in contemporary filmmaking. “I think the last proper one was maybe Unfaithful, which was just as visceral as ours, and nominated for Oscars, and made a ton of money. It was a total mystery to me why they ceased to exist. No good art comes from a place of fear, and I think me and Sydney and the whole cast were fearless,” Mohan told Comicbook.
Discussing further about the decline of erotic thrillers, Mohan said that he believes some of the films haven’t aged well. Nowadays, when viewers witness intimate scenes, they should feel assured that the actors have full control and consent. Over the past decade, the introduction of intimacy coordinators has addressed this concern, he added.
“I think, in this film, what we wanted to do is we didn’t want to just adhere to intimacy standards, we wanted to set a new bar,” Mohan said, explaining their commitment to pushing boundaries while ensuring ethical standards are met.
While TV series like Euphoria and The White Lotus were arguably Sweeney’s breakout roles, the horror genre is something she already has a long history in, having appeared in projects like Nocturne and Night Teeth. With her versatile career, Sweeney continues to expand her acting repertoire, venturing into superhero territory with MCU’s Madame Web.
As Immaculate gears up for its theatrical release, anticipation mounts among horror enthusiasts eager to witness Sweeney’s latest venture into the macabre.
