Filmmaker Nikkhil Advani didn’t hold back when discussing the lack of unity in Bollywood during a recent chat. He said that instead of working together, people are busy competing with each other. Advani, who has been in the industry for over 25 years, rued that the collaborative efforts of past legends like Yash Chopra and Yash Johar, comparing it with the present scenario where such teamwork is missing among many.
“The Hindi film industry has no unity. Being a kid and seeing what people like Yash Chopra and Yash Johar used to do… You hear stories of these people and how they used to work, we don’t have that. We are busy competing with each other. We don’t celebrate each other. The first thing we have to do is come together and say we are one. We don’t agree on anything,” Advani said in an interview with Film Companion.
The filmmaker said that industry agreements, like avoiding paid media and limiting marketing, are often ignored. He also said that he is frustrated by disagreements on release timing and distribution. Speaking of the South Indian film industries, he said that they not only produce audience-friendly films but also have effective release strategies. “There is no agreement on windows (from theatrical to OTT) or distribution model. Each one is for themselves. Vidhu Vinod Chopra will try and do something, be some kind of a rebel, everyone will say ‘wow’ and then say, ‘paagal hai,’” he said.
Last year, Vidhu Vinod Chopra took everyone by surprise when he released his film 12th Fail starring Vikrant Massey. In a time dominated by big event films, the filmmaker opted for minimal promotions, banking on simply word of mouth. Despite this, 12th Fail became a huge success, grossing over Rs 70 crore worldwide and winning several awards.
