Ratna Pathak Shah, acclaimed as one of Indian cinema’s most talented actors, recently disclosed in an interview that she has been without work for a year. While attending the Cannes Film Festival, the actor pointed out that in the age of Instagram, roles are often given based on an actor’s social media following.
In an interview with Brut, Ratna Pathak Shah was asked if appearances have become more crucial than an actor’s talent. She responded affirmatively, saying, “Yes, the answer is simply yes.” The Sarabhai vs Sarabhai star elaborated, “I don’t know how to blame actors for that because these are the things that are asked and are focused on. Depending on the number of followers, people are getting work today. That is what I have heard. Nobody approached me for work because I am not on Instagram, so maybe can than be a reason possibly. I have been completely unemployed for a whole year now. So these are the kind of things that do seem to matter a lot. What to do also? Where will someone go and learn acting from if they want to learn the craft? It’s quite difficult.”
Recently, Ratna graced the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival with the team from Manthan, a film displayed at the prestigious event. Unlike many other stars, she chose to wear her own saree, paired with a bespoke himroo blouse and a jacket. She was accompanied by her husband, actor Naseeruddin Shah, and Prateik Babbar, the son of the late actor Smita Pathak.
Ratna Pathak Shah recently shared insights into her relationship with her sister, Supriya Pathak, describing having a sibling as akin to having a ‘doppelganger’ around. In her conversation with The Male Feminist, Ratna candidly admitted to not being a good sister during their early years, acknowledging that she was an “emotional bully,” a trait she now deeply regrets.
“We are very different from each other and yet there is a sense that there is someone like me,” Ratna explained. Reflecting on their childhood, she admitted, “When we were kids, Supriya and I fought… I was not a good sister. I have to accept that I was a very big bully, but I am glad, I got all my bullying done then. I was an emotionally bully, which is even worse. Maara-maari karna is nicer, cleaner but this emotional bullying is killer. I hang my head in shame, that I did it. I have apologised to Supriya, she has forgiven me, I hope! We are fine.”
On the professional front, Ratna Pathak Shah was recently seen in the 2023 road trip drama ‘Dhak Dhak’, produced by Taapsee Pannu. Supriya Pathak appeared in ‘Satyaprem Ki Katha’, starring Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani.
