Sonakshi Sinha Unveils Look Tests Of Fareedan For ‘Heeramandi’: ‘I Put On Weight, Added A Lot More Drama’
Sonakshi Sinha played a titular role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar'. The actress recently dropped a bundle of look tests.

Sonakshi Sinha is currently basking in the success of her recently released web series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. The actress played the fierce antagonist named Fareedan. Embracing the dual role of mother and daughter, Sonakshi’s portrayal has captivated audiences, earning accolades for her unparalleled performance.

Taking to Instagram, the actress recently shared a glimpse into her transformation process for the character of Rehana, with pictures of her look test as she revealed, “Rehana aapa. AAPA NAHI… HUZOOR!!! Here are some photos from my look test for the cruellest of them all, Rehana. Since I was supposed to be playing my own mother, we wanted to make her slightly different… so I put on some weight and we added a lot more drama with the hair where it was longer and curlier than fareedans and with the makeup where we kept it heavy on the eyes, elongated the eyebrows and added freckles… green lenses too! Full props to my amazing glam team @heemaadattaani and @themadhurinakhale”

Fans flooded the comments section with adoration and praise, with one declaring, “Her peak performance era,” and another stating, “You killed it in the show.” Sonakshi, known for her dedication to her craft, showcased a new avatar that has left an indelible mark on viewers’ hearts.

What also adds character to Sonakshi’s Fareedan is the fact that she’s a woman with a fluid gender, an aspect that the makers subtly hinted at rather than exploring it in a more elaborate fashion. In an exclusive conversation with News18 Showsha, Sonakshi addresses the same and says, “Initially, sir (Bhansali) had told me that Fareedan is very fluid. At that point of time, a lot of it did happen. And in a place like Heeramandi, people were very open about it. Even Ustadji is very openly a gay man. Sir wanted to explore it in different ways. What Fareedan has been through in her life also has impacted her in a way.”

News18 gave Showsha 4.5 stars and wrote, “Bhansali pens a near-perfect screenplay, and it is this rich writing that already forms an impressive foundation for the show. Each character is written with a lot of courage, empathy, and sensitivity. Here, each female character is so well-fleshed out, including those in the periphery, that they all deserve a spin-off of their own.”

Speaking of Sonakshi Sinha’s performance, the review read, “Sonakshi Sinha plays the antagonist in Heeramandi. She is stunning, shrewd, and sardonic. And she fears no one. She single-handedly fights a battle to win justice for her late mother and has no qualms about walking on the path of vices for the same. At the end, the women are all so much more than just tawaifs. Ambition is their eternal companion, and they use their beauty as a weapon to lure men into their beds and, when the right time comes, render them powerless.”
