Shawn Mendes stole the show at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards last night! Performing at the USB Arena, Mendes premiered his new song Nobody Knows from his upcoming self-titled album, Shawn. The singer and his band captivated the audience with a striking performance on a large rug surrounded by candles and a smoky ambience, creating a visually stunning experience.

The song began with a slow, folk-rock vibe but built up to an intense and powerful climax. Alongside the dramatic presentation, the on-stage chemistry between Mendes and his band was electric. Dressed in a black shirt, Mendes delivered a raw performance of the new single, which is scheduled for release on Thursday.

Fans believe that the upcoming Shawn album speaks a lot about the singer’s past relationship with Camila Cabello. At one point, the track’s lyrics go as, “When you’re so in love and souls touch but it’s still not enough, where does it go? Nobody knows.” At the same time, Cabello, who was also present at the VMAs, performed her song Godspeed, sparking more speculations about her indirect jibe at Mendes.

According to reports, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello were in a relationship for a few years before they split in 2021. Despite remaining friends after the breakup, rumours circulated about a possible rekindling of their romance. However, in June 2023, Entertainment Tonight reported that they have officially gone their separate ways and are now “doing their own thing.”

A follow-up to his 2020 LP, Shawn has been written and co-produced by the song-songwriter and made with Scott Harris, Mike Sabath, Nate Mercereau, and Eddie Benjamin. Announcing the record in July this year, Mendes reflected on the emotional process that he went through while making it. “Music really can be medicine. 2 years ago I felt like I had absolutely no idea who I was. A year ago I couldn’t step into a studio without falling into complete panic. So to be here right now with 12 beautiful finished songs feels like such a gift,” he wrote.

His fifth album, Shawn will be out on October 18, 2024.
