Govinda’s wife, Sunita Ahuja, had once opened up about their relationship and how their cultural differences almost got in the way. In an old interview, Sunita had revealed that, being raised in the upscale Bandra area of Mumbai, she initially looked down on Govinda, who grew up in the more modest Virar. The couple has always called their relationship an “arranged-love marriage,” a fact they shared during their appearance on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal two decades ago. It was in that chat where Sunita opened up about how they worked through their differences, while Govinda confessed that he had judged her character because of her modern dressing style.

Adding more spice to the story, Sunita shared that her elder sister is married to Govinda’s uncle, and she would frequently visit their house, where Govinda was staying while struggling to make it big in Bollywood. Govinda remembered, “Main itna desi tha, aur mujhe itna desipana pasand tha, ke mujhe koi bhi tez aadmi nazar aaye, toh main aisa ho jaata tha… (I was a very simple person, I would become very uncomfortable around smart alecks).”

When Simi asked if he meant Sunita was ‘tez’ (bold), Govinda said that he found her very forward. She’d walk around with a dog in her hand, wearing skirts, chewing gum. “Badi tez lagti thi mujhe, haath mein kutta, skirt pehne, chewing gum khaate… Seedhe baat nahi karti, chewing gum kha ke baat karti hai. Bade style mein bulati thi mujhe ‘Chi Chi’. Main kehta tha, ‘Tum kutte ko aise style se bulati ho? Thoda lehja theek karo, aur thodi zindagi bhi theek karo apni (I used to find her very bold, with a dog in her hand, wearing a skirt, chewing gum… She wouldn’t speak directly, only while chewing gum. She would call me ‘Chi Chi’ with a lot of style. I would tell her, ‘Do you call your dog like that with such flair? Fix your tone, and maybe fix your life too).”

Recently, Sunita had also opened up about her background. She revealed on the Time Out with Ankit YouTube channel that she’s half-Punjabi and half-Nepali and that she secretly got baptised when she started school. The reason? She was curious about the wine served during mass and wanted to experience a taste of alcohol.
