When I Landed in Mumbai, I had No Idea Where to Begin: Ludo Actor Rohit Saraf
With Mismatched and Ludo, young actor Rohit Saraf is finally receiving the recognition he'd hoped for from audiences.

Rohit Saraf is one of the most promising new faces in the film and web series space right now, thanks to his 2020 releases Ludo and Mismatched. After making his Bollywood debut with Dear Zindagi, the actor was noticed in Hitchki and The Sky Is Pink. Popular among the young adult audience, Rohit has also starred in the crossover film What Will People Say (2017).

The 24-year-old has no background in films and had no connections when he landed up in Mumbai. “I started at the age of 15, I have been around for 8-9 years now. I have been through several rounds of auditions to bag each of these projects. When I landed in Mumbai, I had no idea where to start. Fortunately, one thing led to another and I was selected through these auditions by the directors,” he says.

“When Dear Zindagi came out, I got a chance to audition for Hichki, and while that was happening I also auditioned for What Will People Say. There has been no project so far that I haven’t auditioned for,” he adds.

Rohit has gotten the most love so far for his last two projects, Anurag Basu’s film Ludo and the Netflix series Mismatched. “Suddenly there is this massive boom and the audience is recognizing me. It has made so much difference in my life because I feel like you’re as good as your fandom. And I have people supporting me like I could never imagine,” he says.

Rohit also had a prominent role beside Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar in The Sky is Pink, which released in 2019. “It’s a very important firm in my life because the subject is very close to my heart since my dad passed away when I was young. The film is also about losing someone in your family, and how the family kind of copes with and deal with it.”

“But there was one more thing, not a lot of people watched it at that point, a lot of people found it heavy. It’s been one and a half years since the film released and I still get messages from people who have watched it now and loved it. The Sky is Pink got me a lot of recognition in the industry,” Rohit shares.

While the viewers are waiting for the second season of Mismatched, the actor has in the meantime shot a fun campaign with veteran actors Renuka Shahane and Deepak Tijori. The ad shows the actors interact in foreign languages like Arabic and French to promote &Privé World Box Office that will bring movies from around the world for Indian viewers.

“When you are working with such veteran actors you are walking on eggshells, not wanting to say or do something wrong. I went with that idea but found that they are such chilled out people. Everything became so much fun, we were improvising so much because they have so much experience. They were so good with the comic element. The film fraternity has been so kind to me, and it was the same with them. Even when they were not on camera, they stayed back to give me my cues. I was also stunned to find that Renuka ma’am was fluent in French. So it was a lot of fun shooting with them,” Rohit shares.
