The 2004 Tamil film Kadhal is still remembered for its unconventional climax, far from the happy ending that was shown in formulaic films. Not only does the lead character played by Bharath not get to stay with the woman of his dreams, but is tortured at the end of the film. Reportedly, the film was based on a true story. The film’s director Balaji Sakthivel was told about the real life incident during a train journey, based on which he decided to make Kadhal. Kadhal was a low budget movie but turned out to be a massive success at the box office. It was remade into several languages. It was remade in Kannada as Cheluvina Chittara in 2007, in Bengali as Chirodini Tumi Je Amar in 2008, in Bangladesh as Nogor Mastan in 2015, in Marathi as Ved Laavi Jeeva in 2010, in Nepali as Manjari in 2013 and in Punjabi as Ramta Jogi in 2015
The chemistry of lead actors Bharath and Sandhya was appreciated a lot in Kadhal and their incomplete love story struck a chord with the audience. Sandhya was in Class 10 when she did the movie. But Sandhya was the first choice for the role. Bharath initially wanted to launch veteran actor R Sarathkumar’s daughter Varalaxmi Sarathkumar for the lead role. But at that point of time, Sarathkumar did not wish his daughter to act in movies as she was very young.
Although Varalaxmi wanted to act in the film, she turned down the offer at her father’s behest. Varalaxmi also missed out on other opportunities like Boys and Saroja as her father did not allow her to star in them. She ultimately made her debut with the 2012 film Podaa Podi. The actress was most recently seen in the superhero film HanuMan, where she portrayed the elder sister of the protagonist played by Teja Sajja.
