The visibility in several parts of the northwest regions were recorded at a low level. Delhi’s Safdarjung and Palam station recorded visibility at just 50 metres, while Punjab’s Patiala and many parts of Uttar Pradesh reported visibility at 25 metres.
Shallow fog are also being reported at isolated pockets over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.*At 0730 hrs IST, Delhi Safdarjung and Delhi Palam both stations are reporting dense fog conditions with 50 m visibility*. @ndmaindia @moesgoi @DDNewslive @airnewsalerts pic.twitter.com/EsbZPBV2S5— India Meteorological Department (@Indiametdept) December 27, 2023
The weather department said that as per its prediction, the dense fog cover has been extensive and intensified across north India, adding that these layers of fog would have developed either at night or early in the morning.
The dense to very dense fog may have the following impact on the essential departments:
TRANSPORT AND AVIATION
1. May affect some airports, highways and railway routes in the areas of met-sub-division.
2. Tough driving conditions with slower journey times.
3. Unless precautionary measures are taken, there may be some road traffic situations as well.
POWER SECTOR
1. Chances of power lines tripping in the areas with dense layers of fog.
HUMAN HEALTH
1. Lung related issues: Dense fog contains particulate matter and other pollutants which gets lodged in the lungs during exposure. This leads to clogged lungs, which then decreases functional capabilities. This often leads to increased episodes of wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath.
2. Impact on people with asthma bronchitis: Exposure to the fog for a long period of time may cause respiratory problems for people having asthma bronchitis and other lung-related problems.
3. Eye Irritation: Dense fog contains pollutants of various kinds and exposure to these elements may tend to irritate the membranes of the eye. This often leads to eye infections, including redness or swelling of the eye.
