South Africa and Sri Lanka will face each other in their opening game of the World Cup. Both the teams made it to the tournament after seventh and eighth-place finishes in the ICC points tally. They will now be looking to make some impact early in the competition to set themselves up for the playoff stage. South Africa have a poor record at ICC tournaments which includes them not having competed in a World Cup final ever. Being the fourth-best ODI team in the world at the moment, South Africa will be looking to change that this year. The team has managed to undergo a solid rebuild that helped them secure multiple series victories in 2023. They managed to overcome Australia, the Netherlands and the West Indies this year. Despite having such a good run South Africa lost their World Cup warm-up game against New Zealand. They will be looking to recover against Sri Lanka in their upcoming game.
The Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi will host the World Cup game between the two on October 7. After having a poor run in the 2023 Asia Cup, Sri Lanka will be looking to make a comeback in India. They are currently on a terrible run, losing back-to-back warm-up matches against Bangladesh and Afghanistan ahead of the World Cup.
