The automotive industry in India is preparing for a striking rise in apprentice hiring that might reach as high as 80 per cent as per the TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship programme. This growth is being fueled by a number of important variables that have the potential to transform the sector and provide new job possibilities.

This increase is being fuelled by many major variables that have the potential to transform the sector and provide new job possibilities.

The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme’s expansion to include the automobile industry is a significant driver of this growth. This program’s extension, originally intended to last from 2022–2023 to 2027–2028, is anticipated to usher in a new age of industry growth and job creation.

As a result, degree-linked apprenticeships in the automotive industry are coming into prominence as a means of providing entry to in-demand positions including Automotive Service Technicians, Assembly Line Operators, and Shopfloor Engineers. Additionally, these programmes offer competitive stipends of between Rs 12,500 and Rs 13,300 per month.

Young professionals will acquire specialised expertise in cutting-edge fields including Electric Powertrain Technology, Battery Technology, and Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure through degree apprenticeship programmes, positioning them for crucial roles in the industry’s development. The industry is also showing a strong commitment to promoting an inclusive workplace environment and achieving gender equality by adopting more female apprentices.

In response to this astounding increase, Mr. Sumit Kumar, Chief Business Officer of TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, stated, “We believe that apprenticeship programs are the foundation of skilled talent development in the automotive industry. The extension of the PLI scheme, with its ₹25,938 crore investment, is a testament to the sector’s immense growth potential. The government’s expectation of creating 1.48 lakh fresh jobs is proof of the scheme’s potential impact.”

With regard to electric cars (EVs), in particular, the expansion strengthens India’s status as a global manufacturing powerhouse. In particular, the “Component Champion Incentive Scheme,” a subset of the larger PLI programme for the automotive industry, has drawn some 75 new participants, including major players in the sector like Maruti Suzuki and Hero MotoCorp.

Another factor increasing the need for individuals with knowledge in these fields is the automotive industry’s transition towards alternative fuels, particularly EVs and sustainable technology, which emphasises the value of apprenticeships in educating the workforce for the future.
