Over the past few months, there has been a rise in ambush attacks in Jammu and Kashmir as the militants have changed their strategy, intelligence agency sources told CNN-News18 on Thursday, a day after three Indian Army personnel, including a Colonel and a Major, as well as a Deputy Superintendent of the J&K Police were killed during a gunfight with terrorists in Anantnag district. Their deaths came less than 24 hours after another Indian Army jawan and an Army dog were gunned down in Rajouri.
The sources told CNN-News18 that the terrorists keep changing their tactics after they learn about the plans of security agencies.
They added that earlier militants were using cellphones that could be traced by security agencies, but now they have abandoned that practice.
Previously, militants would take shelter in one house or place, but now they keep changing their locations so that security agencies can’t easily zero in on them, said the sources. This practice has led to casualties of security personnel.
As per officials, the deviation in intelligence inputs results in ambush attacks. And militants keep on updating themselves about the security plans and, accordingly, keep changing their tactics.
In the Anantnag attack, the terrorists didn’t take shelter in any house but took refuge in the forests, said the sources.
CNN-News18 earlier reported that terrorists are now equipped with YSMS technology, which was used earlier in deadly attacks of 2016 and 2019.
In a meeting of top security officials this year, the use of YSMS and the problems in tracing terrorists due to no digital footprint of Very High Frequency (VHF) encrypted messages without data or any telecom operator were discussed.
The officials spoke about how terrorists are using phones without SIM cards. These phones are paired to radio sets through Bluetooth to send messages and location details for help to other devices in case of any emergency.
