India has been making strides in building up greater energy security. The country has already set a deadline for achieving 20 per cent ethanol-blended petrol and is mulling over oil purchases from Guyana in the long term. Meanwhile, oil prices in the international market have been edging up in response to expectations for increased demand in the upcoming year. However, the cost of both petrol and diesel prices in India has remained constant in India since May 2022.
After the government slashed the excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 and diesel by Rs 6, on May 21 last year, there has been a price freeze in place. Consequently, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have not announced any changes in the price of the two primary automotive fuels for over seven months now. This trend continued on Friday, January 13.
In India’s metropolitan cities, the price of petrol remained close to Rs 100. In Delhi, petrol was retailing at Rs 96.72 per litre, while in Mumbai it was being sold at Rs 106.31 per litre. A litre of petrol cost Rs 102.73 in Chennai, while in Kolkata, the same quantity costs Rs 106.03.
The price of diesel in India was relatively cheaper than petrol. A litre of fuel cost Rs 89.62 in Delhi and Rs 94.27 in Mumbai. In Chennai, the per litre price of fuel was Rs 94.24. In Kolkata, diesel retailed at Rs 92.76 per litre.
