Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Egypt’s President Fattah Abdel El-Sisi on Saturday and exchanged views on the worsening security and humanitarian situation in West Asia. The two leaders also shared concerns regarding terrorism and loss of civilian lives amid the 3-week-old Israel-Hamas war.

“Yesterday, spoke with President @AlsisiOfficial. Exchanged views on the detiorating security and humanitarian situation in West Asia. We share concerns regarding terrorism, violence and loss of civilian lives. We agree on the need for early restoration of peace and stability and facilitating humanitarian assistance,” PM Modi wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

This comes as PM Modi has been in touch with leaders of Israel and Palestine amid the ongoing conflict which has claimed over 9000 lives on both sides. India has also sent humanitarian assistance to Gaza via Egypt, facing the ever-growing bombardment of Israel.

PM Modi and President El-Sisi spoke less than a day after the UN General Assembly (UNGA) approved a nonbinding resolution Friday calling for a “humanitarian truce”. The 193-member world body adopted the resolution by a vote of 120-14 with 45 abstentions after rejecting a Canadian amendment backed by the US.

India, however, was among the countries that abstained from voting on the proposal due to the absence of any direct condemnation of the unprovoked October 7 attack on Israeli civilians. In its comprehensive Explanation of the Vote (EOV), India reiterated its stance on the October 7 Hamas terror attack on Israel.

New Delhi stressed the need for humanitarian support for Gaza and called for the immediate release of the hostages in Gaza. “Our vote on the Resolution was guided by our steadfast and consistent position on the issue. Our Explanation of Vote reiterates this comprehensively and holistically,” sources told CNN-News18.
