‘Sets Things Up Nicely for Oct 14’: Sachin Tendulkar Reacts as Rohit Sharma Breaks His World Cup Record

Following a disappointing duck in his first innings in this World Cup, Rohit Sharma bounced back in the best way possible against Afghanistan, putting on a captain’s knock as he cruised India to an easy win with a mammoth 131 off just 84 deliveries.

The plethora of records Sharma broke were long. The Indian skipper managed to set a new record for the fastest century scored by an Indian in ODI World Cup history, and more importantly, he also overtook the Indian batting legend, Sachin Tendulkar for the most centuries scored for India in the World Cup.

Rohit Sharma has now scored seven centuries in just three World Cups while the former record holder, Sachin Tendulkar had taken part in six World Cups making the feat even more noteworthy.

This historic achievement did not go unnoticed in any way, as the Master Blaster himself took to X, previously known as Twitter, to shower his praise and congratulations to Rohit and Jasprit Bumrah, who also put on a stellar showcase of pace bowling, following India’s win yesterday.

“Two fine performances by Bumrah and Rohit, who were well supported by the bowling and batting units respectively.

“The 2 games have seen different players contributing and that sets things up nicely for the 14th of October. Look forward!,” Tendulkar said.

But, as aforementioned, the plethora of records Rohit set and broke are longer than just that. He became the joint-fastest batter to score 1,000 runs in the ODI World Cup. Both David Warner and Rohit completed 1,000 runs in 19 innings at the World Cup.

Rohit also overtook Chris Gayle’s record for the most sixes scored in international cricket, having smashed whopping 556 sixes so far.

“As a top-order batsman, it is my duty to give my team a perfect start when we are chasing,” said a humble Rohit post-match.

The Men in Blue will be glad to witness their premier batsman regain his form just in time as the two-time champions India will meet 1992 winners Pakistan in its next match at the ICC Cricket World Cup on October 14.

India will be coming off two wins in their first two games, but Pakistan will be no slump either as the side pulled off an iconic victory against Sri Lanka in their tournament opener with wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan leading the Pakistan side to glory with a swashbuckling and match-saving 131 runs.
