Months after ace wrestlers demanded early elections for the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association vice-president Sanjay Singh won the President’s position.
The WFI top spot election grabbed public attention after sexual harassment allegations were levelled against its chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The decision came after the wrestling body took to the polls on Thursday, December 21.
The contest for the president’s post took place between Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association vice-president Sanjay Singh and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Anita Sheoran.
Apart from the new president for WFI, the polls will also fill up posts for a senior vice-president, four vice-presidents, a secretary-general, a treasurer, two joint secretaries and five executive members.
Tough Contest for President’s Post
Sanjay Singh, loyalist of outgoing WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh, was contesting the polls for the post of president of the wrestling body against former Commonwealth Games gold medalist Anita Sheoran. Notably, Sheoran was backed by the wrestlers who accused Brij Bhushan of sexual harassment protests against him demanding his arrest.
Meanwhile, Sanjay Singh was confident of winning the polls, reported news agency ANI. “I am confident of becoming the president of the WFI. My whole panel will win the WFI elections. The polls are happening after SC directive,” he was quoted as saying.
MP Chief Minister Among Other Candidates
Interestingly, the newly-elected Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is also among the candidates contesting for the WFI polls. Yadav, who was a former wrestler, was also contesting for the post of vice-president.
Mohan Yadav, an MLA from the Ujjain Dakshin constituency, sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh last week on December 13.
The process for the WFI election began in July, however, the elections were delayed due to the pending court cases. The elections are taking place after the Supreme Court recently set aside a stay imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
