OPINION | Time for the Christian Community to Reassess its Political Standpoint
The Congress and Left parties appear to portray Israel as the villain and Hamas as messengers of peace. This political competition in whitewashing Hamas is a cause for concern, as pointed out by Bishop Tharayil

As the world observes Israel’s battle against terrorism, Kerala finds itself in the midst of significant political turmoil that could shape the state’s political landscape in the years to come. Congress leaders are busy attending pro-Hamas events. Shashi Tharoor made headlines for attending anti-Israel rally organized by the Muslim League.

Following this, Bishop Thomas Tharayil, the Bishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, the largest Christian denomination in Kerala, made a statement condemning the politics of appeasement practiced by both Congress and the Left, as they seem desparate to whitewash the actions of Hamas terrorists.

It’s evident to almost everyone, from the Bishop to the ordinary citizens, that Hamas terrorists entered Israel without provocation and brutally killed innocent civilians, including children and women. In response, Israel launched counterattacks on Hamas bases in Gaza. The facts seem clear as day.

However, the Congress and Left parties appear to portray Israel as the villain and Hamas as messengers of peace. This political competition in whitewashing Hamas is a cause for concern, as pointed out by Bishop Tharayil.

The Left’s stance on these issues is well-established, with a historical backdrop of anti-Christian policies in Kerala, since the Vimochana Samaram period and before. They have remained silent when radical groups like the Popular Front made threatening statements against Christians and Hindus. While the Bishop of Pala cautioned Christians about Love Jihad and Narcotic Jihad, Islamist radicals besieged the Bishop’s residence, with what seemed to be the implicit backing of the Left government led by Pinarayi Vijayan.

The anti-Christian stance of the Left has traditionally inclined the Christian community toward the Congress party. However, now the Christian community finds itself at crossroads. They realise that the Congress party have taken them for granted and openly allies with Islamist groups.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) passed a resolution against Israel without even mentioning Hamas terrorists. In Kerala, Congress leaders are actively participating in pro-Hamas rallies organized by Islamist groups. Hamas leaders are even virtually addressing these gatherings. Congress has made it abundantly clear that it will stand with Islamist groups and parties, including Welfare Party, Muslim League, SDPI, and others. For votes, they will be willing to whitewash not just Hamas but also ISIS or Al Qaeda.

It’s crucial to recognize that it’s not just the Jewish population but people worldwide, especially Christians, who have suffered from terrorism. From the 9/11 attacks to the Easter church bombings in Sri Lanka, Christians have been victims of terrorism on a large scale. Nations have been converted to Islam through the use of force.

The current political scenario in Kerala raises questions for the Christian community. Should they continue to play a supporting role to Islamists who control the Congress, or should they forge a new path that guarantees a safer and more secure future for the state? Bishop Tharayil’s concerns serve as a call for reflection and reevaluation of their political stance.
