New Delhi: A day after Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi sparked a row over his statement about drug addiction among the youth in Punjab, his party on Friday backed his claims and launched an attack on the state government for not taking steps to solve the problem.
Hitting out at the Punjab government, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said, "Akali government should apologise for the remarks they made yesterday, and they should thank Rahul Gandhi for drawing attention towards this problem."
Pointing that the president of Akali Dal and Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal refused to take responsibility for the menace, the Congress party leader questioned what the Akali Dal government had done to check the drug addiction in the state.
Rallying behind Rahul Gandhi's claims that 70 per cent of the youth in Punjab was addicted to drugs, the Congress issued data to justify his statement.
The Gandhi scion had on Thursday expressed concern over the condition of youngsters in Punjab saying, "What is happening to human resource in Punjab. Seven out of 10 youths have the problem of drugs."
