Allahabad: The Congress on Thursday said BJP leader Uma Bharti's barbs against Rahul Gandhi were "not in good taste" and that the people of Uttar Pradesh would never accept an "imported leader".
"The remarks of Uma Bharti against Congress general secretary were not in good taste. She has not learnt to behave herself despite having occupied high positions in the past," UP Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi said.
Uma had hit back at Rahul Gandhi for his remarks that she was an "outsider" from Madhya Pradesh who was contesting from UP. The firebrand BJP leader had said that Rahul should remember that his mother and Congress President Sonia Gandhi is from Italy and has been accepted in India.
Backing Rahul's statement, Joshi said "the politically conscious people of will never accept an imported leader".
Calling Uma "immature", Joshi pointed at her stormy political career in the party.
"The people of Madhya Pradesh had reposed their faith in Uma following which she became the chief minister of the state. But, she ended up quarrelling with her seniors and left the party only to return years later," she claimed.
Replying to a query, Joshi said Rahul was deeply concerned about the plight of Dalits and felt they were being cheated by the Mayawati government in the state.
Rahul is likely to hold a rally in Bara Assembly constituency, which falls in Allahabad district's impoverished trans-Yamuna region, on January 21, she added.
Asked about party's decision to field a history-sheeter Ramendra Ravi from the Allahabad (West) assembly constituency, the UPCC president said the allegations against him would be examined and if the need arises the party high command would be informed.
She also vehemently denied speculations that Ravi, a Dalit, has been fielded as a "dummy candidate" to cut into the BSP's votes.
