The details of what transpired during the Lokpal Bill Joint Drafting Committee meetings between the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and Team Anna are out in the open. The audio recordings of the Lokpal Bill Joint Drafting Committee between the Central Government and Team Anna have been accessed by CNN-IBN correspondent Rupashree Nanda through the Right to Information Act.
However, there is still no clarity if the tapes have the full details or the edited version of the meeting. The Government has claimed that the tapes are unedited.
After Anna Hazare launched his anti-corruption movement and went on an indefinite fast in April 2011 at the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi demanding a strong Lokpal Bill, the Government set up a Joint Drafting Committee comparing of five ministers and five nominees of Hazare.
The 10-member committee included five from the civil society. The members of the civil society were Hazare, Arvind Kejriwal, senior lawyers Shanti Bhushan and Prashant Bhushan, and Karnataka Lokayukta Santosh Hegde. Shanti Bhushan was the co-chairman along with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
The Government was represented by Mukherjee, Law Minister Salman Khurshid, Telecommunications Minister Kapil Sibal, Law Minister Veerappa Moily and Home Minister P Chidambaram.
After 10 meetings, one of which was boycotted by Team Anna, the two sides failed to arrive at a consensus on the Lokpal Bill, leading to the confrontation and Hazare's second round of fast at the Ramlila Maidan.
Nearly a month after Parliament finally resolved to enact an effective Lokpal, the real points of contentions between Team Anna and the government is now out in the public domain.
