BJP's Mukhtar Anshari has won from Mau, constituency No. 356 of Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly.
Mau is Muslim dominated constituency. Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Anshari of BSP is defending his turf for fifth time against Altaf Ansari of SP and Mahendra Rajbhar of SBSP (BJP’s ally). The constituency has elected only Muslims since 1977.
In the last Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections held in 2012, the Quami Ekta Dal (QED) won this constituency by 5,904 votes. Mukhtar Ansari, the winning QED candidate, got 70,210 votes. His nearest contender, Bheem Rajbhar of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), got 64,306 votes. The voter turnout was 58.25 %.
Elections to 403 seats of Uttar Pradesh were held over 7 phases from February 4 to March 8.
Exit polls had predicted the BJP emerging first in Uttar Pradesh with the Samajwadi Party- Congress alliance emerging second and Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party emerging a distant third.
