Chandigarh: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Tuesday blamed both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for failing to ensure justice for the Sikh community.
"It was a mistake of only one or two people who killed then prime minister Indira Gandhi but the whole Sikh community had to suffer because of weak government. That incident highlighted the Congress party's double standards and proved that they have no space for any minority community," she said, addressing a public gathering in support of former civil aviation minister and BSP candidate from Chandigarh Harmohan Dhawan.
"The BJP is also not different from the Congress and as it was the major party in the NDA (National Democratic Alliance (NDA) coalition for nearly six years but they never tried to pay attention towards the cause of Sikhs. It is the biggest tragedy that Sikhs of our country are still struggling to have justice," Mayawati added.
The BSP supremo said she assured Sikhs living all across the country that complete justice will be given to them if her party came to power. "All the culprits behind the Sikh riots will be identified and put behind the bars," she said.
Mayawati alleged that other national parties are driven by the money of big landlords and corporates and that was why on coming to power, they unduly favour these sections at the cost of backward classes and minorities.
"Both the Congress and the BJP have failed at the centre. Poverty and unemployment are the biggest problems of the country and they are more prevalent among downtrodden sections," she added.
"There are no jobs for our youth and out of frustration, they are adopting the footsteps of Naxalites or some other wrong path," Mayawati added.
