Chandigarh: Former Bharatiya Janata Party Rajya Sabha MP Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife Navjot Kaur broke her silence on Tuesday and denied resigning from the party.
"I have not resigned from BJP. I am still working for my constituency," Navjot Kaur, who represents Amritsar East in the Punjab Assembly, said.
Navjot Singh Sidhu had on Monday quit from the Rajya Sabha membership amid speculation that he is joining the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
On the question of her husband's decision, she said, "My husband wants to serve Punjab. My husband resigned from Rajya Sabha and that can mean only one thing that is he has also quit from the BJP."
"He( Sidhu) had a different view from that of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). When the party (BJP) decided to go ahead with SAD in the elections, it is clear that the party does not respect his views," she added.
Punjab is scheduled to elect a new Assembly in early 2017. the BJP-SAD combine has been in power in the state since 2007 and faces a tough opponent in the form of AAP with the Congress, too, trying to bounce back under the leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh.
Former cricketer "Sixer" Sidhu resigned from the Upper House just 80 days after taking oath on April 28, 2016. He was nominated to Rajya Sabha under the distinguished personalities quota.
Sidhu was elected to Lok Sabha from Amritsar twice between 2004 and 2014. He had to give up his seat for senior party leader Arun Jaitley who contested and lost to Captain Amarinder Singh.
