Abhishek Chaubey's movie 'Udta Punjab' has drawn severe criticism from the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for allegedly portraying Punjab as a hub of drug addicts.
"We object to the intention of the movie. Drug issue is not only restricted to Punjab. The problem is throughout the world. This movie is to defame Punjab," said senior Akali leader Prem Singh.
While denying that his party was playing politics over the issues, Singh argued that illegal drugs was a worldwide problem. "Outsiders are targeting Punjabis. If they treated the drug issue equally, we wouldn't have problems," Singh said while adding that there is no drug problem in Punjab.
However, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt backed the producers of 'Udta Punjab' and said they should be given the right to release the film.
Earlier in the day, the Revising Committee of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) asked for 89 cuts in the movie. The movie is based on drug abuse in Punjab and the committee reportedly wants to remove the word 'Punjab' from the movie except for the tile 'Udta Punjab'.
The movie starring Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh is expected to be released on June 17.
