Puducherry: Opposition AIADMK on Tuesday appealed to Lt Governor Kiran Bedi to turn down any proposal by the Congress ministry to appoint nominated legislators in the union territory assembly, apprehending that the provision would be misused to favour ruling partymen.
AIADMK Legislature Party leader A Anbalagan told reporters here that there was a statutory provision to appoint three persons, drawn from fields such as literary, art, culture and other non-political sectors as nominated MLAs.
"But most of the time the party in power would accommodate their own men as nominated legislators, particularly those who are defeated in the Assembly polls or those who could not get a party ticket," he said adding that the provision had thus been misused.
Hence, the Lt Governor should 'unhesitatingly' reject any recommendation by the Narayanaswamy government on nomination of legislators.
He also asked the Lt Governor not to give her nod if the ministry came forward to appoint a non-official person as Chairman of public sector undertakings and Corporations.
