New Delhi: The narrative of Uttar Pradesh elections has, so far, focused on Ram Temple, the Hindu ‘exodus’ in Kairana, the alleged return of goonda raj and, to an extent, demonetisation. But the key election issue, according to voters, is power cuts in the state.
According to a survey conducted for IndiaSpend by FourthLion Technologies, almost one-third voters in the state believe power cuts are the state’s biggest problem.
Around 28% voters interviewed by FourthLion Technologies, a data analytics and public opinion polling firm, said power cuts were the state’s biggest issue. Another 20% said jobs, economy and development were the most important electoral issues, while 10% said it was the shortage of water.
The state will hold its first phase of Assembly elections on February 11. Over 14 crore people will vote to decide a bitterly fought contest between the BJP, BSP and the ruling Samajwadi Party, which has tied up with the Congress.
Quoting Census data, the report in IndiaSpend said 81.4% of urban households used electricity as the main source of energy in 2011, while as few as 23.7% did so in rural areas. It further said that 17.7 million rural households in the state were unelectrified, down from 18.6 million in March 2014.
Around 38% of the participants in the FourthLion-IndiaSpend survey said they face power cuts every day, while 16% said it was a weekly affair.
