New Delhi: A day after Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi declared to go on a fast to pitch himself on the national stage, the BJP on Wednesday said there was no question of declaring a Prime Ministerial candidate of the party as there are many leaders who are capable of leading the nation.
BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy on Wednesday, referring to a statement given earlier by the party President, said, "BJP president Nitin Gadkari has made it clear that as of now Party will not announce any contenders for the top post."
Rudy also confirmed that the party will not project anyone as prime ministerial candidate.
Rudy's statement comes a few days after senior leader LK Advani announced rath yatra against corruption.
Modi's moves to go on fast are also being looked at as his attempt at an image makeover and intentions to come to the centre soon. A US Congressional report has said that it might just turn out to be a direct contest between controversial Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
A latest report on India by the Congressional Research Service (CRS), a bipartisan and independent research wing of the US Congress, finds Modi a strong prime ministerial candidate for the opposition BJP in 2014, while at the same time discussing the prospect of the Congress putting up Rahul Gandhi for the position.
