Recently, a Discord employee recorded her reaction during a virtual meeting with the organisation, where she learned that she was among the ones who were laid off.

Messaging service Discord has planned to lay off 17 percent of its employees, impacting 170 workers in a variety of areas, as part of a calculated strategy to narrow its focus and improve operational efficiency. This decision was communicated by the firm’s CEO Jason Citron in an internal memo that The Verge was able to access at an all-hands meeting. Citron clarified in the memo that this layoff was a long-term economic decision required to better serve Discord’s users and respect the company’s goal.

Recently, a Discord employee recorded her reaction during a virtual meeting with the organisation, where she learned that she was among the ones who were laid off. The woman dropped the video on X (formerly Twitter) along with the screenshot of the email where she found out that she was no longer associated with Discord.

The video captured her sitting in front of a laptop as an automated voice explained the layoff to all the employees who joined the meeting. The message stated that the staff who would be discharged from Discord would be given an email within a stipulated time. “In your email, you will learn whether or not your employment has been impacted by this reduction,” it said.

Within 20 minutes, the woman revealed that she got the layoff email, indicating that she would no longer perform her duties with Discord. To her, it felt like ‘a breakup text through email’. “It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that your role has been impacted by our company-wide reduction-in-force, and your employment with Discord is ending,” read an excerpt of the email she received from HR. The mail also came with details of her last working day in the company.

The woman was quick to share the news with her ex-colleagues at Discord before adding in the textual layout that she recently bought a house. The uncertainty and shock on her face was unmissable. The video concluded with the woman’s fiance comforting her.

Soon after the visual clip emerged on X, social media users were quick to react to the post. Sharing the same sentiment with the woman, one individual wrote, “I wish I had recorded my layoff experience from Snap a year ago. It was kind of the same screaming haha! I feel you girl.” Motivating her, another opined that it was “time to start your own business.” “I’m sorry to hear that! I hope you will be able to find something good ASAP” read a third uplifting comment.

According to reports, Discord will be providing three months of outplacement services, and five months of salary, along with a few other benefits on February 1 to the laid-off workers.
