New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee's condition has improved remarkably in the past 24 hours and it is likely that he will be discharged from the Army Hospital on Tuesday.

According to a medical bulletin issued by the hospital on Monday a team of specialists at the Army Research and Referral Hospital checked Mukherjee on Monday morning and a fresh series of investigations, including CT and MRI head and CT chest, were carried out.

"Fresh investigations have ruled out any bone or internal injuries on Mukherjee and he is now able to walk around," the medical bulletin said. "His vital parameters continue to be within normal limits," it said.

"He has a lacerated wound scalp, which is clean and has nine sutres. Apart from this, there are no other bone or soft tissue injuries," it said.

Mukherjee "continues to remain active and cheerful" and had a number of callers, including CPI(M) leaders Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechury and Chief of Army Staff General JJ Singh.

Mukherjee (72) had been admitted to the hospital on Sunday after he was rushed to Delhi from Kolkata in a special plane with serious injuries sustained in a road accident in West Bengal.

Mukherjee suffered injuries to his head and other parts of the body when his car was hit by a truck while he was returning to Kolkata from Murshidabad. He was initially treated at Bethuadahari Primary Hospital and later shifted to Krishnanagar Hospital in West Bengal.

Vice-president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on Monday extended his best wishes for the speedy recovery and long life of Mukherjee.

Returning to Delhi after his Varanasi tour on Monday evening, the Vice-President proceeded straight to the R and R Hospital from the airport to enquire about the minister's health and well being.

At that time, CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat and Congress leader Margaret Alva were also present.
