Unveiled to the world late last year, the much-awaited Moto X Force has finally come to India. Priced at Rs 49,999, the phone is currently the most expensive Motorola phone available in the Indian market. While the Moto X Force may look in line with the design and concept of other modern-day smartphones, there is one unique thing in the phone that makes it the first-of-its-kind.
The Moto X Force’s USP might not be visible to the eye, maybe until till you happen to drop the phone. The phone’s distinctive feature is its display, which has been designed to absorb shock and is guaranteed not to crack or shatter.
Smartphone screens, since the beginning, have been fragile things, and Motorola says it has used its technology to seal that chink in the smartphone armour. The display on the Moto X Force includes the company’s proprietary Moto ShatterShield technology, which is claimed to have an integrated system of 5 layers specifically designed to absorb shock and not to shatter.
Users will “never have to fear the dreaded drop or have to deal with the expensive hassle of having to replace a busted screen," claims Motorola
Most leading phones usually use chemically strengthened glass. But that still being glass will crack if it hits a hard surface with enough force. Therefore Motorola has replaced glass with various forms of plastic to make screen shatterproof.
Here is a dissection of the display used in the Moto X Force that can help you understand what makes it a shatterproof phone.
Layer 5: Aluminum chassis - It starts with a rigid aluminum core that provides structural integrity and durability.
Layer 4: AMOLED display - On top of that is an AMOLED flexible display. Using a flexible display absorbs shock and makes it possible to flex during a drop versus breaking like most screens.
Layer 3: Dual touch layer - Then, a dual touch layer has been created to help it function even after an accident. In the event of an impact that damages the primary touch-sensitive layer, a second layer takes over to maintain touchscreen performance. The backup touch capacitors would still respond to touch even with some damage.
Layer 2: Interior lens - The next layer is the interior polycarbonate lens which provides a clear protective shield. It uses the same type of material used in shatter-resistant eyeglasses.
Layer 1: Exterior protective lens - Lastly, it has been topped with a user-replaceable exterior lens, which is a protective layer with a proprietary hardcoat that helps protect the display against normal wear and tear.
While the Moto X Force’s Moto ShatterShield display is designed to not crack or shatter, there may be some visible damage in the event of a drop. This is why the Motorola has built a replaceable lens right into the ShatterShield’s 5 layer system. This means that in case of any dents or scratches, users have the option to replace the top exterior lens by purchasing a Moto ShatterShield replacement lens.
Adding weight to the company’s claims is this video, which demonstrates how the Moto X Force, the world’s first shatterproof phone, was put to a bit bizarre drop test by a team at UnlockRiver.com. The team attached the phone to an aerial drone and let it drop from a height over 900 feet. Not only the phone's display survive the test, but it was also functioning. There was, however, some damage to the phone's upper-left side, but it remained responsive to touch inputs even after the drop test.

Given that the new display technology comes from the company which has proven its worth and has made a name for itself over the years, it appears to be promising. We are, however, yet to test it and verify the company’s claims about the phone’s shatterproof abilities.
