iPhone 16 Pro Likely To Launch With Tetraprism Telephoto Lens With 5X Optical Zoom
Apple is reportedly considering a design change for the standard iPhone 16 models, potentially reverting to the vertical camera layout.

After introducing a new tetraprism lens system to the iPhone 15 Pro Max earlier this year, Apple is now reportedly planning to launch the iPhone 16 Pro and ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro Max with company’s tetraprism Telephoto lens, offering enhanced zoom capabilities.

In September, Apple launched a new tetraprism lens system for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, enabling 5x optical zoom for the first time. The camera technology was not added to the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌, marking one of the first times that Apple has added camera technology to one Pro device and not the other.

The limitation was rumored to be due to space constraints, allowing only the Pro Max to accommodate the hardware, but yield may have also been a factor. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, when lens supplier Largan was producing the tetraprism hardware for the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max in the third quarter of 2023, production yield was at just 40 pe rcent. Yield has now improved to 70 per cent or more.

The company is planning to increase the size of the ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro to 6.3 inches, up from 6.1 inches, providing more space for camera hardware. This size increase, coupled with yield improvements, addresses the factors that likely restricted the tetraprism lens to the larger Pro Max iPhone.

According to the report, It remains uncertain if Apple intends to enhance the tetraprism lens in 2024. There are rumors about Apple developing a “super telephoto camera” with an extended focal length.

In related news, Apple is reportedly considering a design change for the standard iPhone 16 models, potentially reverting to the vertical camera layout seen in the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, the report said.

Apple used a diagonal layout for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, and “it’s not entirely clear why Apple would revert, but one theory is that it could allow the devices to record spatial video for Apple Vision Pro,” said MacRumors.
