A case of a woman being oblivious to the fact that her boyfriend was cheating her and sucking her finances dry has come to the fore from China. A court in Shanghai convicted a man of fraud for stealing 2.6 million yuan (approximately Rs 3 crore) from his girlfriend by pretending to be a doctor at a prestigious hospital. The man, identified as Zhang, received a sentence of 11 years and six months in prison. While the court revealed the case in May, the exact dates of the crime were not disclosed. Zhang, who was actually employed at a hotel, began his fraudulent scheme in 2016 after being introduced to Huang, a shopping mall employee. Throughout their six-year relationship, Zhang claimed to be an obstetrician-gynaecologist at a prestigious hospital in Shanghai and a graduate of a renowned medical school in China. Zhang crafted a convincing persona as a “successful professional,” and Huang never questioned his story. They started dating approximately three months after they first met.
During this time, he often took money from Huang in the name of home investment and spent it on gambling and paying off his debts. Whenever Huang would want to visit him at work, Zhang used to come up with excuses of being busy with work. Huang’s family began to express concerns about the relationship when Zhang started to avoid returning the money he had taken from her. Eventually, Huang grew suspicious and contacted the hospital to verify Zhang’s employment, only to find out that he did not work there.
According to court documents, during the trial, the prosecutor said: “While love is beautiful, one must also be wary of sweet traps”. Zhang has been sentenced to 11 years in jail for cheating.and fraud. Huang has received support online from many users once the case became viral on Chinese social media.
