The issue of women’s safety has been in the news over the last few days. It all started with a horrific incident of a junior doctor’s alleged rape and murder in a state-run hospital in Kolkata. Many people have thronged the streets across the country, calling for justice. Amid the ongoing protest, a woman from Gurugram, Puja Singh, recently accused an Ola driver of harassing her in the middle of a ride. The marketing professional brought the incident to light through a LinkedIn post where she claimed that the driver threatened her to complete the payment before reaching the destination.
Last week, the woman booked an Ola cab to the Delhi airport early in the morning. “I had an early flight and was trying to book a cab via both Rapido and Ola. Despite both rides being confirmed, I chose Ola due to the trust associated with your brand,” she wrote in her post.
Only 10 minutes after the journey began, the driver stopped to fill his water bottle. Puja Singh took it lightly until the man gave her a QR code and forced her to pay the fare. “I asked him to end the ride first so I could confirm the amount, but instead, he insisted that I pay first, threatening not to let me leave until I did so,” she added.
According to Singh, the following events were “deeply unsettling” as the driver became aggressive and kept threatening her, saying, “I’ll come back at night and show you what happens.” While all of these were going on, the woman tried to book another cab.
“Despite my attempts to remain calm, he continued to yell, even as I was trying to guide my next driver to my location. To make matters worse, he took a video of me without my consent, and when I asked him to delete it, he flatly refused,” Singh noted.
The woman further claimed that the driver raised his hands to slap her, saying, “I’ll hit you so hard.” “I was shaken, but I told him that if he dared to touch me, there would be consequences. His response was to laugh and continue with his verbal abuse,” she revealed.
At the end of her post, Singh called out the Ola cab service and demanded “immediate action” against the person. According to India Today, a representative from the company called her on August 22 and notified her that they had suspended the driver. Singh also shared a picture of the car’s number plate in her post.
