Several countries like the United States of America, India, Pakistan, North Korea, Russia and China have nuclear weapons. This means, there is a constant threat of nuclear attack. In the current global scenario, almost every day there is news of bombings and shootings between countries. Amid this, it is only natural to fear a nuclear war and wonder which place on Earth might be safe, if at all a country gets nuked. What if a war among countries leads to a world war and one of them decides to use a nuclear weapon? Now, an investigative journalist from America named Annie Jacobsen has done immense research on the impact of a nuclear war on the planet. She shared that there are only two countries where the chances of human survival will be higher if at all such a fateful event occurs.
As per reports of Daily Star News, Annie Jacobsen shared that within the first 72 hours of a nuclear war, about 5 billion people would be dead. The 3 billion who will survive the aftermath will be facing many challenges. She shared that thick smoke from the fires across three continents may trigger a mini-ice age, which would make it impossible for the survivors to grow food. She explained that most of the world, especially the mid-latitudes would be covered in sheets of ice. According to her, places like Iowa and Ukraine will be covered in snow for the next 10 years.
While speaking to the Diary of a CEO podcast, she said that the consequence of a nuclear war would be fatal, and may lead to failed agriculture and more deaths. Annie Jacobsen further added, “On top of that you have radiation poisoning because the ozone layer will be so damaged and destroyed that you couldn’t be outside in the sunlight – people will be forced to live underground.”
She shared that a leading expert in climate and atmospheric science shared that there are only a few places where agriculture would be possible and those are Australia and New Zealand. While the USA may have nuclear bunkers and might be a safe haven, but only till there will be power. The smaller bunks will be functional as long as there’s gasoline. The effect of nuclear war will destroy crops, people will die of hunger and radiation poisoning.
