Raksha Bandhan is a deeply cherished festival in India, celebrating the special bond between brothers and sisters. Traditionally, sisters tie a rakhi, a sacred thread, on their brothers’ wrists, offering love and prayers in exchange for a promise of protection. While this festival has been celebrated for generations, the advent of social media has added a modern twist to these age-old rituals. Today, capturing these heartfelt moments on camera and sharing them as reels on Instagram and other platforms has become a popular way to celebrate and connect.
So did a 23-year-old woman who asked her cousins to make a Raksha Bandhan reel with her, only to be rejected by all. This made her so upset that she ended up refusing to celebrate the festival.
According to a post shared on Reddit, the incident took place when a group of cousins were present at their sister’s home for Raksha Bandhan. The user wrote how his sister asked them to make a reel on “cringe audio,” to which they eventually declined. Despite the refusal, she tried to convince them by showing that her friends had also created similar reels but faced rejection.
“She got so upset with me that she refused to tie me a Rakhi because of this reason. I still gave her gifts, but is a Reel that important to people? She didn’t even talk to me after that. Was I wrong?” the user added.
My cousin refused to tie me a rakhi because I didn’t record a reel with her. byu/alwayscorrectt indelhi
The post drew a lot of reactions, leaving users divided about the woman’s demand. While some shared their own Rakhi experiences, some called her out for behaving immaturely. A user wrote, “And my sister was crying while she tied my rakhi,” while another commented, “And my younger brother tied me rakhi (I’m female) because I protect him.”
“You shouldn’t doubt your actions. If you are shy and don’t want to, just don’t. If she wanna act like a child let her do so. She should understand the importance of this festival, atleast you did what you had to as a brother. But nah don’t feel bad for the reel thing,” another comment read.
A user remarked, “23 and immature. Wow,” while another explained, “It’s unfortunate that your cousin let a reel affect her feelings about Raksha Bandhan. The festival is about celebrating your bond, not social media trends. It might help to talk to her and explain your perspective.”
